David Bowie released the single “Lazarus” on Thursday, and while it’s the next song from his album Blackstar it’s also the only track from the collection that also appears in Bowie’s off-Broadway play Lazarus. To celebrate its release, Michael C. Hall, who stars in the play, and the show’s cast appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to perform “Lazarus.”
Bowie was nowhere to be found but his presence loomed as Hall embodied the show’s lead character, Thomas Newton. Based on Walter Tevis’ novel The Man Who Fell to Earth, Lazarus began its run earlier this month.
Blackstar is due out Jan. 8, and will also feature the opening track to British show The Last Panthers, which Bowie wrote.
