On the heels of earning four Grammy nods—which came after winning three CMAs—Chris Stapleton stopped by The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon for an epic performance of “Sometimes I Cry,” the closer on his tremendous album Traveller, which EW named the best country album of the year.

The album version of the song was recorded live in front of friends and family after the rest of the album had been finished. He told EW about the session earlier this year and said, “That’s one of those things that was a happy accident. I had the notion to record that song in front of some folks at a little listening party we had here in town. It was an, ‘Oh hey, by the way, we’re gonna record one more. Here’s how we did the others.’ It gave that effect of the lights coming on a little bit and the realization, ‘Oh! There’s not a lot of trickery going on here.'”

There sure isn’t. Check the Fallon performance.
