1995 was a great year for Jane Austen onscreen: 2015 marked the 20th anniversaries of Clueless, the beloved high-school update of Austen’s Emma (which celebrates its 200th anniversary this month); the iconic BBC Pride and Prejudice miniseries that launched Colin Firth to international heartthrob status; and Roger Michell’s feature film version of Persuasion, also a BBC production.
Now, as this year comes to a close, we have one more 20-year-old Austen adaptation to recognize: Ang Lee’s gorgeous Sense and Sensibility, which hit theaters in a limited release on Dec. 15, 1995.
In honor of this cine-literary landmark, it’s time to find out which of the heroines of Austen’s first novel you are. Are you the practical — perhaps too practical — Elinor Dashwood, played in the movie by Emma Thompson (who won an Academy Award for writing the film’s screenplay)? Or are you the romantic — maybe even too romantic! — Marianne Dashwood, brought to life in the film by a 19-year-old pre-Titanic Kate Winslet (who picked up her first ever Oscar nomination for her performance)? Take our quiz to find out!
