Think of it as the Passion Play meets Glee.

Fox is upping the ante on faith-based event programming like History’s The Bible by presenting The Passion, a two-hour musical planned for Palm Sunday next year. The project from Dick Clark Productions will be hosted by Tyler Perry and will feature a cast of “today’s biggest stars performing a variety of popular music,” promises the network. The music will be arranged by Adam Anders (Glee).

No castmembers have been announced.

But this won’t be a period piece with old robes and sandals. This iteration will be set in modern day and will follow the story of Jesus of Nazareth as he presides over the Last Supper before Judas betrays him. Fox says the story will be performed live at “iconic” locations in New Orleans and will feature a procession of hundreds of people carrying a 120-foot, illuminated cross outside the Superdome to a live stage at Woldenburg Park.

The Passion is both wonderfully entertaining and genuinely inspirational,” said Fox Entertainment President David Madden in a statement. “We are so thrilled to have the multi-talented Tyler Perry join us for this epic music production. He is the perfect host to lead the cast – and viewers – through the streets of New Orleans in this contemporary re-telling of a timeless story.”

The Passion is based on a format created in the Netherlands by Eye2Eye Media. The Dutch version has been produced annually since 2011. It will air live on fox March 20.
