Oh, my.

George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu in the original Star Trek television series, has seen the new Star Trek Beyond trailer, and he isn’t exactly thrilled by it.

“It doesn’t have that element that made Star Trek — Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek — what it was,” Takei says in a video review of the trailer for Tech Insider.

Star Trek Beyond is the third film in the latest Star Trek reboot series, following 2009’s Star Trek and 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness, both of which were directed by J.J. Abrams. Since Abrams left Trek for Wars and took the helm on this month’s The Force Awakens, Justin Lin assumed directing duties for Beyond, the first trailer for which was released unexpectedly on Monday.

“It looks like a terrific action-adventure movie. It should be a very successful Star Trek movie,” he conceded, but added, “I didn’t, in the preview, note anything of the substance of what made Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek so engaging.”

Star Trek Beyond is scheduled for release on July 22, 2016.
