'Glistening gel' was involved

Long before Bradley Cooper was an Oscar-nominated actor, he was an awkward teen having illicit hookups in a tool shed — or at least he played one in the cult comedy Wet Hot American Summer.

During an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Tuesday, Cooper fondly recalled his famous sex scene with Michael Ian Black from the 2001 film.

“I remember we kept our socks on,” Cooper said, laughing. “Big tube socks. And we put [on] a lot of, you know, that sweat stuff, that glistening gel.”

Sweat stuff aside, Cooper added that “the joke of that scene was to make it like the one serious scene in the whole movie. The whole movie is jokes and then that one scene is dead [serious]. Shot seriously, lit well.”

The Joy actor also recounted the anxiety he and Black felt when they first arrived on set. “We were both trying to pretend it was going to happen when we first met,” Cooper said. “I remember playing ping-pong with him knowing that the countdown to the sex scene is like two weeks away, pretending that everything is fine.”

The pair recently reunited on the Netflix prequel series Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, and according to Cooper, the old spark was still there. “Jen Lawrence and I kind of have chemistry, but Michael Ian Black ….”
