Xena: Warrior Princess just took another key step forward to returning to air.

NBC has not only confirmed that the show is in development after months of rumors, but a writer-producer has been hired: Javier Grillo-Marxuach, who has worked on Syfy’s Helix, NBC’s Medium and ABC’s Lost.

After news of development broke last July, former series star Lucy Lawless tweeted, “news of a #Xena reboot is just a rumor. I’d love it to happen one day but it’s still in the wishful thinking stage.”

Then in August, NBC’s entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said he’d “love” for it to happen.

Well, it’s now past wishful thinking stage and firmly in the development pipeline. The new version is being developed by original co-creator (and Lawless’ husband) Rob Tapert along with Sam Raimi for their company Ghost House Pictures in association with NBC International Television Studios.

The action-adventure fantasy series Xena: Warrior Princess originally aired in syndication from 1995 through 2001.
