The One Direction hiatus is officially here.
The band gave their last scheduled appearance on The X Factor U.K. on Sunday, five years after they themselves placed third on the show. The quartet performed their hit singles “Infinity” and “History” off their new album Made in the A.M.
While One Direction is scheduled to appear on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, hosted by Ryan Seacrest, their appearance will be prerecorded. In August, the band confirmed reports that they’d be taking a “well earned break.”
In a message posted to the band’s Twitter account, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan thanked fans for all their years of support.

“This is just a massive, massive thank you to all of our fans,” Payne says in the video. “Obviously you guys made all this happen for us and we can’t believe the way that you’ve supported us over the last five years. Today’s a very special day for us because this is like the last part of our first chapter. But a massive thank you, honestly. We cannot believe you guys. You’re amazing, the most dedicated people I think we’ve ever seen in our lives, so thank you for enjoying us over the years. And I hope there’s many more years to come.”
Payne previously told EW that they chose to end the album with the song “History” because it was “about the fans and what they’ve done.”
“More than anything, the song is about the way the fans and everyone have created this massive thing — One Direction — over the past five years,” he told EW. “Out of [‘History’] comes a little bit of closure for this chapter of One Direction.”
