‘Tis the season for bears.

One week after Leonardo DiCaprio’s interaction with a bear in The Revenant received prominent headlines across the Internet, Gwendoline Christie explained how she interacted with a “highly trained bear” on Game of Thrones last season.

“It’s a real bear,” Christie told James Corden after the Late Late Show host showed a photo of the actress in character as Brienne of Tarth facing off with the bear.

As Christie told Corden, the bear was pampered on set, including having his own trailer and being soothed with “country and western music.”

“This is real,” Christie said. “When it was good, it was fed cream in a frying pan with a really long handle. And when it came out of its trailer, you had to give it a round of applause.”

Speaking after the bear episode of Game of Thrones aired in the spring, Christie told HitFix that shooting with the live bear “and being facilitated to make it as real as possible” was the highlight of her career.

Game of Thrones returns in April.
