Reese Witherspoon is looking to bring Barbie’s origin story to the big screen.

Witherspoon’s production banner Pacific Standard is teaming with Bold Films to develop a movie based on Robin Gerber’s book Barbie and Ruth: The Story of the World’s Most Famous Doll and the Woman Who Created Her, the companies announced Monday.

Published in 2010, Gerber’s book chronicles how Ruth Handler turned the toy industry upside down by creating a grown-up doll for girls after watching her daughter at play.

The project is a potential starring vehicle for Witherspoon, whose recent films include Hot Pursuit, The Good Lie, and Wild.

Pacific Standard, which Witherspoon founded with Bruna Papandrea to foster films with multi-faceted female characters, produced Hot Pursuit and Wild, as well as Gone Girl.

Witherspoon and Papandrea will produce Barbie and Ruth with Michel Litvak of Bold Films, with Bold financing.
