The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2, the final installment in the franchise, premiered Thursday evening and brought in an estimated $16 million at the box office.
It’s a strong and promising number — Jurassic World took home $18.5 million in its opening night — but one that trails behind all of the three previous Hunger Games films. Catching Fire, the second Hunger Games film, had the highest Thursday-night box office out of the four films, grossing $25.2 million. Mockingjay — Part 1 dipped down to a still impressive $17 million.
Mockingjay — Part 1 went on to record the smallest opening weekend ($121.9 million) out of the three films so far, so Mockingjay — Part 2 might ultimately surpass that figure thanks to devoted audiences who want to witness The Hunger Games’ last cinematic hurrah.
