Pot plays a big role onscreen in The Night Before, the new Christmas comedy starring Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and according to Gordon-Levitt the drug also led to some contributions offscreen.

Speaking to Jimmy Kimmel on Wednesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, Gordon-Levitt recalled the first time he ever smoked pot with Rogen — which was just before the pair starred together in 50/50 — and then explained how things worked on the set of The Night Before.

“We’re all throwing ideas in at the last minute, and there is definitely a joint being passed around the room early in the day,” Gordon-Levitt said of the collaborative process of making a movie with Rogen (The Night Before was directed by 50/50 director Jonathan Levine). “The first day I said like, ‘Oh, I know how to smoke. I’ve smoked since I was a kid. I can do this, sure. Let’s see! It’ll inspire good comedy.'”

But as Gordon-Levitt remembered, the comedy inspired by smoking pot was only funny to him. (“Worthless,” added Kimmel.)

“So I decided to start smoking at the end of the day, after the work was done,” Gordon-Levitt said of his amended smoking schedule. “Smoke at the end of the day, kids, wait until the day’s work is done. Then enjoy your weed.”

The Night Before is out on Nov. 20.
