Gods of Egypt unleashes first trailer
If you’ve spent years lying awake in your sarcophagus thinking, “I wonder when Gerard Butler is going to play the god of darkness,” your weird faith in Egyptian mythos has paid off.
The first trailer for Summit and Lionsgate’s Gods of Egypt has arrived, and it’s as outrageous, stunning, and crazy as you might have imagined from the character posters and the very premise itself.
Gods of Egypt stars Butler as the Egyptian god of darkness, Set, who ascends to the throne in the desert land after ostensibly stealing a magical eye from would-be king and actual god Horus (Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, seen here with both hands but one less eye). Set’s reign stands to be overthrown by a mortal named Bek (The Giver star and rare Chocolate Frog card Brenton Thwaites) if he can form an unlikely alliance with Horus, save the world, and rescue his one true love.
It’s all set against the backdrop of ancient Egypt, and as the trailer suggests, there’s no lack of exploding pyramids, arena matches between bird-gods, and Gerard Butler ripping out eyeballs.
Gods of Egypt also stars Chadwick Boseman, Geoffrey Rush, Rufus Sewell, Elodie Yung, and Courtney Eaton. The film arrives in theaters on Feb. 26, 2016.
