Zoe Kazan to star in Lena Dunham's HBO pilot Max, replacing Lisa Joyce

Lena Dunham’s 1960s-set feminism comedy Max has a new leading lady.

Zoe Kazan will star in the HBO pilot as Maxine Woodruff, a low-level magazine writer who stumbles into a fight for women’s rights that neither she nor the world may be prepared for, EW has confirmed.

The Ruby Sparks actress and writer replaces Lisa Joyce, who was originally to star in the project. Joyce will focus on another HBO comedy she’s appearing in, Insecure, which was recently ordered to series.

Dunham is directing the pilot for Max and will serve as an executive producer alongside her Girls collaborators Jenni Konner, Murray Miller, and Ilene Landress. Miller wrote the script.

Kazan is also acting in another HBO pilot, David Simon’s The Deuce, and she can currently be seen on the big screen in Our Brand Is Crisis.
