Eric Church gave fans an unexpected surprise this week — and no, it wasn’t a peek behind his signature Ray Bans — he released an album, Beyonce-style. Members of his fan club, The Church Choir, received the 10-song set in their mailboxes, while the rest of us received via the singer’s new partnership with Apple Music/iTunes.

Mr. Misunderstood, a follow-up to what was Church’s most bawdy, brazen, totally out there collection yet, The Outsiders (2014), is a Heartland Rock collection that works by the sheer audacity of its creator to do whatever he damn well pleases.

Thursday, the surprises kept coming as Church dropped a video for the title track and, presumably, lead single after performing it at the 2015 CMA Awards. “Mr. Misunderstood” is another battle cry for Church’s renegade niche. The singer looks back, remembering with his husky baritone, what it was like to not quite fit in and where that got him: to the center of Music City.
