Rory Feek, of husband-and-wife country duo Joey + Rory, has kept followers up to date on his wife Joey’s cancer diagnosis on his “Life I Live” blog. In a heartbreaking new post, Rory revealed that Joey has said goodbye to her stepdaughters, Heidi and Hopie.

“She told them how much she loved them, and how proud she is of them. And how proud she is to be their mother,” he writes. “And then she talked with them about the one thing that she didn’t think she would ever have to talk with them about: Leaving them. And then she told them of the day when they’ll be together again in Heaven.”

He detailed how Joey is too weak to get up most days and sleeps a lot. Rory also reflected on Joey’s role as a mother to the girls since they wed 13 years ago. “They don’t actually call Joey ‘mom’. They never have. I don’t know why,” he writes. “Maybe they’ve always been too afraid to completely trust… to completely give all of their hearts over — afraid that they’ll get left again by a woman that they love.

“But if you look in their contacts on each of the girls’ phones,” he continues, “‘Mom’ is how Joey’s number is listed.”

Joey has been battling an aggressive form of cancer, one that started as stage four cervical cancer, which has since spread. After rounds of chemotherapy and other treatment, doctors told her that there was nothing else medically that could be done. So she and Rory decided to not pursue further treatment for her terminal illness, according to their Oct. 23 blog post.

In September, the duo released their cover of “Softly and Tenderly” that featured footage of Joey singing, spending time at home with the couple’s baby, Indiana, and undergoing chemotherapy.
