It looks as though Chloe Sevigny has an ax to grind. The American Horror Story and Big Love actress is on board to play Lizzie Borden, the Massachusetts woman infamously accused of murdering her father and stepmother in 1893, in an untitled thriller.
Twilight star Kristen Stewart is in early talks to portray the Bordens’ live-in maid in the film, which is being directed by Belgian filmmaker Pieter Van Hees and written by Bryce Kass. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news.
The gruesome double-murder and the ensuing trial, which ultimately resulted in Lizzie Borden’s acquittal, have long fascinated the public. The closely covered scandal inspired a notorious skipping rhyme — “Lizzie Borden took an ax / and gave her mother 40 whacks …” — as well as books, magazine articles, plays, movies, TV series, and a ballet.
Sevigny was previously attached to a Lizzie Borden project at HBO. Her other upcoming films include the period drama Love and Friendship and the horror movie Antibirth.
Stewart, who has favored indie projects in her post-Twilight phase, also has several films in the pipeline, including a Woody Allen movie and Ang Lee’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.
