Back in August, Empire star Jussie Smollett confirmed the long-held rumor that Mariah Carey would appear on season 2 of the hit Fox show.

“That rumor is true,” he said. “That makes me feel so good to say that rumor is true.”

But during EW Fest on Saturday in New York, Smollett was a little less definitive about Carey’s possible participation.

“We’re going to let that ride with Father Lee,” Smollett told EW’s Tim Stack, referencing Empire co-creator Lee Daniels, when asked about Carey. “Because we’re just going to stop saying things until the person is on the set.”

For his part, Daniels has been teasing Carey on Empire for months. “Mariah is coming on,” he told EW in September. “We are trying to crack a story for her now. As with Mariah, she wants it her way. But as with Lee Daniels, I want it my way. So it’s the usual back-and-forth with mamacita until we figure out exactly what it’s going to be. We’re very close to cracking story for her. But we’re very excited.”

Smollett and Empire star Taraji P. Henson participated in a lively discussion at EW Fest on Saturday. Head here for a full wrap-up of their panel.
