Lana Del Rey’s entrancing sound has captivated everyone from Coldplay to Kate Moss, but the singer’s only just learned of her mass appeal.

“I’ve only recently become aware of the heterosexual males who are into my music,” Del Rey tells Billboard.

The 30-year-old artist, whose fourth album Honeymoon dropped in September, describes herself as methodical in the new cover story, a trait that carries over to her work as well. “Mixing and mastering can take four more months after we’re done — three to mix and one to master,” she tells the magazine. “I like having a plan. Though I do leave spaces for ad-libbing in the studio when I write.”

One of Del Rey’s favorite spots to pen new music: California’s Big Sur.

“I’ll get in the car and drive the streets, feeling for places,” the “Summertime Sadness” singer reveals to the trade. “I go to Big Sur. I love Big Sur, but it has gotten so touristy. I went to the General Store, and there were hordes. On a Monday! But I’m drawn there. Sometimes I go to write.”

In addition to writing a book one day, Del Rey, born Lizzy Grant, has considered acting. “I’m open to it all,” she says.
