We’ve said before that “Smooth Criminal” demonstrates the “ecstatic anger in Michael Jackson’s soul.” That kind of energy makes Jackson’s 1987 single a tough song to cover, and yet Yoshimi Tsujimoto has done it beautifully on a shakuhachi, which is a bamboo flute, and koto, a string instrument. Feel free to sing along as the women race through the hit, but it’s not necessary — the flute speaks for itself.
