Doctor Who and Guardians of the Galaxy star Karen Gillan is a fine actress and, in this writer’s experience, winningly pleasant interviewee. But it had never occurred to me that she might also be someone with behind-the-camera chops until I happened to watch the short film Conventional, which the Scottish star both wrote and directed. The tale of a convention-attending horror actress (Gillan) who fears her days in the Hollywood sun may be over, the movie is a desolate and depressing nine minutes. It’s also terrific.
