Carrie Underwood is a master of kerosene — she’ll key your car, slash your tires, and stomp on your heart quicker than just about anyone in Nashville. And while it’s a wonderful mess to get swept up in, when she checks in on a delicate track like the “What I Never Knew I Always Wanted,” which she shared on Monday, it’s a welcome reminder of what a controlled and nuanced vocalist the American Idol vet is.

A cut off Storyteller, Underwood’s album due out on Oct. 23, the tune is a love letter to her husband and new son; a testimony to the way they’ve filled out life in unexpected ways. “Never pictured myself singing lullabies,” she croons. “Sitting in a rocking chair there in the middle of the night / In the quiet and the dark / You’re stealing every bit of my heart with your daddy’s eyes.”

Underwood co-wrote the track with country hitmaker Brett James and Hillary Lindsey. Check it out below.
