Absolutely Fabulous movie with Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley begins filming
Absolutely fabulous news, darlings — the ladies of Absolutely Fabulous are back and officially making a movie.
Fox Searchlight and BBC Films announced Monday that filming has begun on a film version of the hit British sitcom, with Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley reprising their famous roles as Edina and Patsy. Other members of the original cast are also returning, including includes Julia Sawalha as Saffy, Jane Horrocks as Bubble, and June Whitfield as Mother.
“I am thrilled and excited to finally start filming. We are all taking our medication and hoping for the best,” Saunders said in the announcement.
Mandie Fletcher (Absolutely Fabulous) is directing from a script penned by Saunders, who is also among the project’s executive producers.
Here is the studios’ description of the film: “Appropriate for their big screen debut, Edina and Patsy are still oozing glitz and glamour, living the high life they are accustomed to; shopping, drinking and clubbing their way around London’s trendiest hotspots. Blamed for a major incident at an uber fashionable launch party, they become entangled in a media storm and are relentlessly pursued by the paparazzi. Fleeing penniless to the glamorous playground of the super-rich, the French Riviera, they hatch a plan to make their escape permanent and live the high life forever more!”
And, in proper Ab Fab style, the announcement teases that the cast will be joined by stars of the acting, music, and fashion worlds.
Filming is to take place on location in the U.K. and south of France for seven weeks, and the movie will be released next year.
