Eddie Redmayne’s The Danish Girl character, Lili, is based on a real woman who made history by becoming one of the first people to receive sex reassignment surgery in the 1920s — but it wasn’t easy, as the second trailer for the upcoming film shows.
“He wants to lock me up,” Lili tells her wife, Gerda (Alicia Vikander) at one point. Soon after, Gerda confronts a man: “We trusted you,” she says sternly in what looks like a hospital hallway. “We came to you for help.”
Despite the setbacks, Lili eventually appears on an operating table, implying that she eventually got the help she needed. Watch the trailer above, and see the film when it arrives in theaters Nov. 27.
