Warning: This story contains major spoilers from the season premiere of Jane The Virgin. Read at your own risk!

You can always count on Jane The Virgin to bring the comedy and drama in equal doses, and the season 2 premiere was no different. The episode kicked off with Jane (Gina Rodriguez) & co. speedily rescuing baby Mateo from Sin Rostro’s (Bridget Regan) clutches, after which our girl struggled with issues like breastfeeding and learning to trust her intuition as a new mommy.

Her baby daddy Rafael (Justin Baldoni) faced some struggles of his own as he tried to figure out his role in the Villanueva family, while Xo (Andrea Navedo) and Rogelio (Jaime Camil) did their best to ignore the fact that yes, they actually did have a quickie wedding in Vegas and are legally married. #Oops. Petra (Yael Grobglas) inseminated herself with Rafael’s second sperm sample, and just when we all thought that might be the craziest thing to occur in “Chapter 23,” the episode’s closing moments revealed that a new sinister character seems to have it out for Jane. What the what?! Here, showrunner and EP Jennie Snyder Urman walks us through that plot twist, reveals how Rodriguez slipped into the role of new mom, and spills some details on the state of TV’s most epic love triangle.

I think everyone can agree that Gina did a great job of portraying a new mom, right down to that convincing “just-gave-birth” waddle. What kind of conversations did you have with her about getting into character?

Well, Gina is not a mom but her sisters both have young kids and one of her sisters is pregnant now. So we talked a lot about what it feels like right after you give birth, right down how it feels to walk for the first time. We even talked about nursing, and how if you’re nursing your baby, your No. 1 concern is feeding and making sure your baby is getting enough milk. I had my experience as a mom to draw on, and with Gina being around kids forever, she really understood what she had to do.

The consensus on social media is the baby who played Mateo was beyond adorable.

We actually used multiple babies in the episode. We had so many newborns on set, but the funny thing was that Justin [Baldoni] has just had a new baby so he was awesome at handling them. He knew exactly what do to with them because he’s going through that right now in real life.

We see Petra before and after she started playing with that now-infamous turkey baster. Did she really succeed in impregnating herself?

Sure did. Scott is definitely going to blackmail her, since he allowed her to get away with it. And if it doesn’t work out, Petra won’t want Rafael to know what’s happened. So Scott probably has two weeks of leverage before Petra can take a pregnancy test and learn her results.

What can you tell us about that mysterious new villain who appeared at the end of the episode?

You’ve never met that person, I can tell you that much. It brings fresh drama and a new connection to the story. I won’t say more than that!

You’ve said that Jane gets married this season, but in the premiere there was no indication of who might end up the victor. What can you say about the love triangle between Rafael, Michael and Jane?

She’s going to be grappling with the decision of who to choose for awhile. Something will force the issue, and then she’ll make her choice. As always, there will be events that pop up that Jane wasn’t expecting. To get her to marriage, there will be lots of twists and turns.

Be honest – are you Team Rafael or Team Michael?

You know, I root for them at different points at different points in the story. I do always root for the underdog, because it feels like a challenge, like how do we build them back up and turn the audiences and make them love them a bit more? So once someone is pulling away and they’re no longer the obvious choice, I tend to root for them.

Last but not least – let’s talk guest stars! When will we see guest stars Britney Spears and Kesha?

You’ll see Kesha in the second episode. I think people will enjoy it. She moves next door to Jane and they have a little bit of a noise issue because of Kesha’s band. She’s a musician. And Britney filmed the first part of her appearance last Monday, and she was incredible. There’s this huge beef between she and Rogelio, and Rogelio can’t let it go. She and Gina also have a really awesome moment right when Gina sees her, and I’m so excited for everyone to see it.
