Ed Sheeran can add another accomplishment to his resume. Spotify announced this morning that “Thinking Out Loud,” the crooner’s smash single from 2014’s X, has become the first song to reach 500 million streams on the service.

“Chuffed to hear that ‘Thinking out Loud’ has had half a billion plays on Spotify,” Sheeran said in a press release. “Being the first artist to hit that milestone is amazing. Thanks to all the people who use this as a wedding song, soundtrack to a date and as a way to woo someone into a Netflix and Chill situation.”

Sheeran’s omnipresence transcends Netflix and Chill, though. About 19 million Spotify users stream his tunes each month, a robust listenership that has garnered 2.9 billion song streams and inclusion on 38 million playlists. His influence is so massive, in fact, that Spotify created an entire metric called The Sheerio Index to track his regional popularity.

But Sheeran has some catching up to do — The Weeknd and Calvin Harris still top his monthly listener count. In the meantime, revisit our recent interview with the singer.
