Eighty-one countries will vie for the Oscar for foreign-language feature at the 88th Academy Awards, including first-time entrant Paraguay, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced.
The number is two shy of last year’s record-setting group.
Notable among this year’s submissions is China’s choice, Go Away Mr. Tumor, directed by Han Yan. The country had been expected to submit Jean-Jacques Annaud’s Wolf Totem as its foreign-language hopeful.
The 81 foreign-language submissions will be whittled down to a shortlist of nine, then furthered narrowed to five finalists. Nominations for next year’s Oscars will be announced Jan. 14, and the ceremony will take place Feb. 28.
