Ridley Scott’s The Martian has already won over critics and audiences — its opening weekend took in an estimated $55 million, almost matching 2013’s Gravity‘s record for the biggest October opening of all time.

It’s a thrilling adventure story set amidst a terrifying scenario: astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is mistakenly left behind on Mars when his crew believes him dead. Stranded on an inhospitable planet, Mark’s only option is to “science the sh–” out of it at every turn in order to survive. In this deleted scene, we can see all the reasons why The Martian has struck such a successful chord: Watney records a video detailing all the scientific work he’s been doing for his colleagues — though he can’t resist teasing them along the way. And who doesn’t like a dirty joke involving a chem camera?
