Stephenie Meyer shocked the world when she announced that 10th-anniversary editions of Twilight will come packaged with a new story. Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined retells the story of the first novel in the saga, but with a twist: the characters are gender-swapped. The human protagonist is a boy named “Beau,” attracted to a mysterious golden-eyed vampire named “Edythe.” As you’d expect, the news has sent shockwaves through social media. EW combed through Twitter to find the greatest to tweet reactions to the gender-bent Twilight.

Some were pleasingly shocked.

Others took the opportunity to gently rib Meyer, or mourn that she released Life and Death instead of her long-promised Midnight Sun (a retelling of Twilight from Edward Cullen’s perspective).

Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined is out today, in both print and audio versions.
