Fox is developing a racially-charged event series about the “dangerous aftermath” of a police shooting when an African-American cop kills a white teen in Tennessee.

The unnamed project from Gina Prince-Bythewood (Beyond the Lights, The Secret Life of Bees, Love & Basketball) and Reggie Rock Bythewood (Notorious), will star Sanaa Lathan (The Perfect Guy) as an investigator on the case. Together with a yet-to-be-cast special prosecutor, Lathan’s character will “navigate the media attention, public debate and the social unrest that comes with such a volatile case, as they seek justice before the divided town erupts in a race war,” according to Fox.

There are several event series, previously known as miniseries, in the works at the broadcast networks this year. ABC, for example, has Madoff, a Richard Dreyfuss starrer about former investment advisor and convicted felon Bernie Madoff. Fox, meanwhile, is bringing back The X Files.

NBC also refers to Heroes: Reborn as an event series.
