It’s almost time to check-in to the Hotel Cortez for the latest installment of American Horror Story, and Max Greenfield stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show to dish about the upcoming Hotel with host Ellen DeGeneres.

While the season is expected to be frightening with all of its new, terrifying monsters (DeGeneres assured her audience that she likes “scary” and this definitely qualifies), Greenfield’s transformation into platinum blonde Hollywood junkie Gabriel will be another sight to see — even Lady Gaga was wowed by his change.

“Lady Gaga and I did not have anything together, but we ran into each other a couple times on set,” Greenfield said. “But I saw her after the premiere and she was looking at those pictures that you just saw. The only time that I had met her was when I looked like that. So, I saw her after the premiere, and I could tell she didn’t really recognize me, and my wife Tess was like, ‘Oh no, he’s the one who gets brutalized.’”

“And she goes, ‘Oh gosh,’” Greenfield continued. “And she gave me one of the greatest compliments I have ever gotten from Lady Gaga. She goes, ‘I am very I am very rarely impressed by a transformation and yours was really terrific,’ and I thought, ‘It will never get better than this.’”

Greenfield knows first-hand the horrors lurking the halls of the Hotel Cortez. This season includes what creator Ryan Murphy called “the most disturbing scene we’ve ever done,” featuring Greenfield, Sarah Paulson, and a creature named The Addiction Demon.

American Horror Story: Hotel debuts Oct. 7 at 10 p.m. ET on FX.
