Doctor Who showrunner on the fate of the sonic screwdriver
It spoiled the line of the Doctor's jacket
Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has a message for fans who aren’t sold on the Doctor’s new gadget: “Sometimes, you actually have to embrace the heresy.”
When the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) traded his sonic screwdriver for sonic sunglasses in the second half of the season 9 premiere, not all fans were ready to embrace “wearable technology.” The screwdriver has been a signature tool in the Doctor’s arsenal since the late 1960s — but in a video shared by BBC One’s YouTube account, Moffat argues that the sunglasses are being true to the history of the long-running series.
“It maybe resurrected the original joke … that the screwdriver was just a screwdriver that made a noise,” Moffat says.
But while the Doctor isn’t “wedded to a screwdriver,” the showrunner says that fans of the iconic device will eventually be rewarded.
“I’m sure the screwdriver will show up again someday.”
Until then, fans will always have Twitter.
