- Veteran actors Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson have boarded Assassin’s Creed, Fox’s adaptation of the popular video game franchise about a deadly rivalry between two secret societies through the ages. Michael Fassbender is starring as Callum Lynch, who relives the adventures of a lethal ancestor in 15th-century Spain and faces threats in the present day. Marion Cotillard costars, and Justin Kurzel is directing from a script by Bill Collage, Adam Cooper, and Michael Lesslie. The film is slated for release Dec. 21, 2016. [Deadline]
- James McAvoy, best known to moviegoers as the younger incarnation of Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise, is in negotiations to star in a supernatural thriller directed by M. Night Shyamalan and produced by Jason Blum. The Scottish actor would play the role previously circled by Joaquin Phoenix in the yet untitled movie, plot details of which have yet to be revealed. Shyamalan is of course known for twisty genre films, andBlum is an expert in low-budget horror flicks, including Shyamalan’s recent chiller The Visit. [The Hollywood Reporter]
- Joseph Gordon-Levitt is attached to star in the psychological thriller In Sight, from producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who oversaw the last three Oscar telecasts together, and screenwriter Katie Lovejoy. Universal Pictures just acquired the pitch; plot details are unknown. Gordon-Levitt can currently be seen in the high-wire drama The Walk. [Deadline]
- Shea Whigham and John Ortiz have been added to the cast of Kong: Skull Island, Legendary Entertainment’s creature feature set amid the mysterious homeland of King Kong. They join a star-studded ensemble featuring Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and John Goodman. Jordan Vogt-Roberts is directing the movie, which recently moved from Universal to Warner Bros. to set up a potential King Kong-Godzilla crossover. Shooting is expected to start this fall. [Deadline]
