To sum up Young Thug in one word, a lazy but accurate choice is “eccentric.” The 23-year-old Atlanta rapper boasts a musical and sartorial aesthetic wildly different than his peers. (For example: Check the music video for “Best Friend.”)

In a recent GQ interview, Thug revealed some background to his style, including why he sports women’s clothing.

“Because women’s clothes are [slimmer] than men’s clothes,” Thug told GQ. “The jeans I got on right now, they’re women’s jeans. But they fit how they’re supposed to fit. Like a rock star. The only thing I probably have in men’s is like briefs. T-shirts. Ninety percent of my clothes are women’s.”

The rapper said that he started wearing female clothing when he was 12. His father wouldn’t buy him the skinny pants he wanted, so he started gambling in order to make money to buy his own clothes.

The interviewer directly asked whether Thug had any involvement in the shooting of idol-turned-rival Lil Wayne’s tour bus in April. Thug replied directly and tersely: “F–k no.” An indictment filed in June named Thug (born Jeffrey Lamar Williams) and Young Money CEO Birdman (born Bryan Williams) as conspiring with the alleged shooter, Jimmy Winfrey. Winfrey was, at one point, Thug’s tour manager.

His new album, Hy!£UN35 (Hi Tunes), was originally due Aug. 28, but has no release date.
