UPDATE: Justin Bieber has heard CHVRCHES’ cover and is pleased.

EARLIER: Glasgow synth-pop trio CHVRCHES clearly love the Biebs’ new tune as much of the rest of us. They covered the recent Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 “What Do You Mean?” for the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge and prove the song has real legs to stand on, even without Justin Bieber at the helm. Rather than strip the melodic tune down, they dressed it up with darker, thicker synth lines and heavier basslines, which allow Lauren Mayberry’s vocal space to soar.

CHRVCHES are prepping for the release of their new album, The Bones Of What You Believe‘s follow-up, Every Eye Open, which arrives Friday. They spoke to EW about putting together their empowering new set earlier this fall, and Mayberry said she wanted to “write from a place of strength that I aspire to, something that’s a bit more assertive than playing a victim and writing about it from a sadder angle.”
