Mr. Robot star Rami Malek on season 2
Mr. Robot’s freshman season concluded weeks ago, but the show still seems to be at the center of pop-culture—with some viewers just coming into their obsession, and others still mulling over the finale.
In any case, people are still talking about it, proving that USA’s hacker drama has made a big mark in little time. “The way it’s caught on with what seems to be a massive audience is something that I’m very proud of and humbled by,” Rami Malek told Entertainment Weekly at People’s Ones to Watch red carpet in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
Malek stars as computer programmer Elliot Alderson alongside Christian Slater as the title character on the show, which was renewed for a second season before its first season officially premiered. He attributes the show’s success and resonance to its timeliness. “There’s a part of it that’s anticipating events in a climate where anything can happen,” Malek says. “To pinpoint certain things the way we do is scary and enticing at the same time.”
His co-star Portia Doubleday echoes. “It speaks to this generation and what’s happening currently, especially with technology and our relationship to technology and hacking,” says Doubleday, who plays Elliot’s childhood friend Angela Moss. “I think that in the next five years we’re going to see how much [hacking] really is going to affect society and our relationships. It’s really relatable and the characters are really relatable as well.”
Considering the topics covered on the show, Malek is in no rush to make predictions for what might happen in season 2.
“I hate to think about those issues because I feel like everything that we do touch upon ends up being something that can cause massive damage to our societies,” he says, “so I’d rather not anticipate the things that are going to happen.”
