Ahead of her fifth album release, Vanessa Carlton took EW inside her New York City home to discuss her songwriting process and perform “Blue Pool,” the title track from Carlton’s July EP, on her own piano.

“I was reminded of these images of old Hollywood in the ’60s,” Carlton said of the inspiration for “Blue Pool,” which will also appear on her forthcoming full-length, Liberman, which drops Oct. 23 and is available for pre-order on her website. The singer also explains that the cut tells the story of a man and woman who used to be together before achieving fame. “The time for you and I was never quite right,” she sings. Check out the video, which is part of EW’s ongoing In The Basement series, for the full performance.
