Shiri Appleby is going from playing matchmaker to playing doctor.

The UnREAL star is joining the cast of CBS medical drama Code Black as a guest-star, EW has confirmed. She is slated to pop up in one fall episode — and will likely appear in additonal episodes — as Dr. Carla Niven, an ex of first-year resident Dr. Malaya Pineda (Melanie Chandra).

The pregnant Dr. Niven, who works at a nearby hospital, reconnects with Dr. Pineda when she checks into the Angels Memorial ER and is treated by Pineda for muscle pain that is ultimately diagnosed as cancer. The pair began a relationship when Niven was doing her training at Angels and Pineda was a medical student.

Appleby’s recent TV credits besides UnREAL — Lifetime’s behind-the-scenes-of-a-reality-dating-show dramedy that has been renewed for a second season — include Girls, Elementary, Law & Order: SVU and Chicago Fire. She previously starred in Life Unexpected and Roswell.

CBS debuts Code Black on Sept. 30 at 10 p.m.

Variety first reported the news.
