Our Brand is Crisis is a perfect film for the modern political scene — at least according to the cast and crew.

Sandra Bullock, Scott McNairy, and producer Grant Heslov reflected on the relevance of their new project in an interview with JD Heyman at the PEOPLE, InStyle and Entertainment Weekly photo studio during the Toronto International Film Festival.

“This film’s really about big business. Period,” Bullock said. “It’s marketing, it’s advertising, when you really get down to it, and that’s what’s heartbreaking. … Rather than let me decide who the best candidate is, I’ve been manipulated to vote or buy something.”

Our Brand Is Crisis is a fictionalized take on the 2005 documentary about James Carville’s political consulting group and their work during the 2002 Bolivian Presidential election. Bullock plays political strategist “Calamity” Jane Bodine, “basically a female Karl Rove,” the actress told EW. Directed by David Gordon Green, it’s due in theaters Oct. 30. McNairy said that with U.S. elections around the corner, the film’s release “couldn’t have better timing.”

“Working on this film, for me, was a look into the politics — the side show of it,” he said.

When asked by Heyman if working on the film altered their views on American politics, Heslov said: “That was sort of the point. This group of Americans goes to a very foreign place and runs an American-style campaign and the havoc that that wreaked.”
