The official trailer for Room arrived Wednesday, showing Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay as a mother and son trapped together — and then escaping from — the tiny space he believes is the entire world.

Directed by Lenny Abramson and based off Emma Donoghue’s best-selling novel of the same name, the film stars Tremblay as 5-year-old Jack, who knows of nothing else in the world besides “Room,” the windowless 10-by-10-foot space he shares with his Ma (Larson).

While Ma works to ensure Jack’s life in Room is a happy one — playing games, telling stories, baking a birthday cake — she also devises a daring plan for them to escape. When it succeeds, she and Jack then have to face life in the real world, where there are joys (Ma is reunited with her parents, Jack sees a dog and his reflection) but also television cameras and the harrowing realities of what they endured.

Room, also starring Joan Allen and William H. Macy, heads to the Toronto International Film Festival after screening previously at Telluride. It opens in New York and Los Angeles on Oct. 16 and nationwide on Nov. 6.
