Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert trade late-night pleasantries
What late-night wars?
Though Jimmy Fallon once again has another timeslot competitor over at CBS in Stephen Colbert, it appears as if the hosts intend to make their rivalry a friendly one.
“I want to say congratulations to our pal Stephen Colbert and his buddies over at the Late Show,” Fallon told viewers following his Tonight Show monologue. “Stephen Colbert starts tonight. Unfortunately it’s on a different network at the same time that my show’s on so I can’t watch, but I wish him all the luck in the world. Congratulations to everybody over there.”
As if to further prove that there’s no beef to be had in this new era of late-night, Fallon even made a brief cameo on the Late Show. In showing off his shiny new digs, Colbert began flipping through channels on one of the Late Show‘s on-set screens and landed on The Tonight Show, which he promptly decided to DVR — perhaps as a reminder that in a crowded late-night landscape, viewers don’t necessarily need to make a choice between the two.
The pair’s brief chat was amicable, and Fallon promised to catch up with Colbert in the late-night locker room. (“You don’t want to know about the smell,” Colbert warned. “It’s pretty ripe in there.”)
