OMI's 'Cheerleader' is the official song of the summer, according to the charts
The long, hotly-contested race is officially over and OMI, the singer from just outside of Kingston, Jamaica has come out victorious. According to the Billboard charts, “Cheerleader,” his infectious electro-ska ditty, dominated all necessary airwaves and search bars this season.
When EW spoke to the singer in July, he explained why he thought the tune had taken off saying, “The story is so simple with its level of innocence. It’s a conversation: ‘Look, this is how I see you, and I appreciate this about you,'” before giving some credit to German producer Felix Jaehn who re-worked the tune (which originally released in 2012 as a light reggae number) into the danceable version you undoubtedly know by now. “He kept true to the song’s essence,” the singer said. “It wasn’t one of those crazy remixes that highlight the DJ and not the artist.”
Go ahead, give it one more spin, for summer 2015’s sake.
