Guy Maddin is back. The celebrated Canadian director is set to release his first full-length film in four years soon, and EW has the first look at it.

The Forbidden Room is another Maddin tribute to classic cinema with even more perversion added. The old-school celluloid look enhances the targeted era of the ’30s in a fantastic plot and colorful world. Sailors are trapped on a submarine when they discover a stowed away woodsman, who then recounts his epic that led him there.

The film, co-directed by Evan Johnson, will have its East Coast premiere at the New York Film Festival on Sept. 28 and 29. It opens for the public on Oct. 7 beginning with an exclusive engagement at New York City’s Film Forum.
