When Justin Bieber cried following his performance at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, he instantly stitched another story thread into one of the most memorable award shows in recent years. Appearing on Wednesday night’s episode of The Tonight Show, Bieber explained the impetus behind his emotional breakdown to Jimmy Fallon.

“It was just so overwhelming for me,” Bieber said. “I missed some cues so I was a little disappointed at that … I wasn’t expecting them to support me in the way they did.”

Bieber, who will release his first album since 2012 later this year, expressed to Fallon that being booed at the 2013 Billboard Awards didn’t help his perspective coming into the VMAs.

“I’ve worked so hard at this album, I’ve worked so hard at at just becoming the man I want to become and then, like, stepping into situations you just can’t help but feel judged,” Bieber said.

Bieber told Fallon he felt that his emotional moment was special because it was authentic.
