Nick Jonas dropped “Levels” last week, and on Sunday at the MTV Video Music Awards pre-show he gave the sexy and downbeat-but-still-dancey track its first live treatment.

Before Jonas performed, he told Sway his goal was to “have as much fun as possible.” After commanding the carpet, flanked with space helmet-equipped dancers, the singer danced with fans, engaged in a slightly awkward dance off with Kelly Clarkson, and delivered a completely sexy vocal performance. Which is to say, mission accomplished, Nick.

“Levels” is the first track we’ve heard off Jonas’ anticipated third solo collection, which he teased to EW this summer, and said “I’m coming with a new record at some point later this year or next year. I feel like the next step is just going to be getting a collection of a few more songs and maybe repackaging the album. I still feel like there’s some life left on the record I released last year.”

His single “Chains” was nominated for Best Male Video at the VMAs.
