VMAs 2015 opening: Miley Cyrus, Andy Samberg, Ike Barinholtz provide Instagram lessons
Miley Cyrus opened the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards with a bang on Sunday evening, taking the stage after Nicki Minaj’s performance with Taylor Swift.
Cyrus nodded to her illustrious VMAs history in the monologue, joking, “I have literally done everything on the VMAs stage and none of it showed that I was qualified to host but here we are.” She went on to give shoutouts to Justin Bieber and The Weeknd before adding that in addition to the young people, there are “a couple of really old ones, you know who you are — dad!”
She then declared her love for Instagram, cutting away to a sketch with Andy Samberg and Ike Barinholtz. The two comedians gave Cyrus tips on how to have the crazy artistic vision that she is known for, suggesting plates of spaghetti, shots with corn, and finally, a group selfie at the VMAs with various costumed buddies.
After the sketch, Miley and some friends posed for a selfie. “On the count of three say, ‘Marijuana,’” Cyrus said.
The 22-year-old singer hosted the show at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater, and kicked things off on a wild note ahead of performances by Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, and Demi Lovato, among others. Cyrus was not up for any Moonmen at the awards show, but took home Video of the Year at the 2014 ceremony for her infamous “Wrecking Ball” visuals.
