Macklemore and Ryan Lewis just recently broke their nearly three-year musical silence with the release of “Growing Up,” and they affirmed that they are indeed back on Sunday night with a performance of its followup, “Downtown,” at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Following Nicki Minaj’s opening performance in which she brought out Taylor Swift by surprise, the Seattle-bred duo took to the outdoor stage to perform their latest track with the help of collaborator Eric Nally. And like how the track itself is reminiscent of their jaunty, star-making hit “Thrift Shop,” their performance was a playful one. In other words, it was perfect for the VMAs.

This marked their first VMA performance since 2013, when they took home three Moonmen.
