President Obama, Vice head to prison in Fixing the System trailer
Barack Obama has become the first sitting U.S. president to visit a federal prison, and Vice was there to document it.
A new trailer for the HBO special Fixing the System offers a glimpse of the commander in chief’s tour of El Reno, a medium-security penitentiary in Oklahoma, with Vice founder Shane Smith in July. While there, Obama met with prison inmates and staff as part of the documentary examining the many interlocking pieces — and flaws — of the criminal justice system.
“We think it’s somehow normal for black youth or Latino youth to be going through the system this way,” Obama says in the trailer. “It’s not normal.”
Working with Vice comes as the latest instance of Obama spreading his message along unconventional channels; he has also appeared on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast and Zach Galifianakis’ Web series Between Two Ferns.
As for Vice, the upstart media company has been aggressively expanding its edgy, youth-oriented brand of news, having struck a major deal with HBO earlier this year.
Fixing the System will air Sept. 27 on HBO. Watch the trailer below.
