Miley Cyrus’ controversial appearance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards had a fan in Donald Trump.

In an interview with the New York Times ahead of this year’s VMAs, the 22-year-old singer revealed that Trump reached out to her after the performance — which featured some aggressive twerking and an infamous foam finger.

“I was staying at the Trump Hotel and Donald Trump literally called and said, basically, ‘I know everyone’s talking about it, but I loved it,'” Cyrus, who will host this year’s VMAs, said to the Times. “I had no idea anyone was talking about it yet.”

That Trump would contact Cyrus might seem odd, but the current Republican presidential candidate frontrunner was quite interested in her right around the time of the 2013 VMAs. In September of that year, just a few weeks after Cyrus’ VMAs appearance, Trump tweeted that Cyrus could “do much better” than Liam Hemsworth after the couple split up.

That same month, Trump wrote that Cyrus was “on a very triky [sic] and slippery path right now. The right moves will lead to greatness, the wrong moves to oblivion! GUIDANCE.”
