Queen Latifah: Chris Martin paid $100,000 so she could have Alicia Keys' piano
'He is salt of the earth as far as I'm concerned,' Latifah told Jimmy Kimmel
Queen Latifah had some kind words for Coldplay singer Chris Martin on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday night. Latifah appeared on the show to promote her film Bessie and told an unexpected story about seeing Martin at a charity event.
“One of the craziest things that happened … I sit next to this white guy. I don’t know this guy, but he seems cool,” Latifah told Kimmel.
The charity was auctioning a piano that Alicia Keys played while performing with Jay Z for their award-winning hit, “Empire State of Mind.” (Latifah says the piano was from the Grammys, but Keys and Jay Z did not perform that song at the Grammys. The piano she describes sounds like it might have been played during Keys and Jay Z’s 2009 VMAs performance. Sometimes you need to fact-check Queen Latifah. It happens.)
Martin insisted that he and Latifah try to get the room to start bidding. “We get it up to like $150,000 for the piano,” Latifah said. She realized after they had bid that it was Chris Martin helping her.
Latifah praised Martin for his generosity saying: “He pays $100,000 on the piano, I pay 50. He gives me the piano. He is the salt of the earth as far I’m concerned.”
